The African Forum for Research and Education in Health (AFREhealth) is an interdisciplinary health professional grouping that seeks to work with Ministries of Health, training institutions and other stakeholders to improve the quality of health care in Africa through research, education and capacity building. It is a conglomerate of individuals, institutions, associations and networks from all the geographic and linguistic regions of Africa namely Anglophone, Francophone, Lusophone and Arabophone. Membership is open to African and external stakeholders committed to an Africa with strong, self-sustaining and robust health systems.

Sounding the alarm on the eye in healthy people living with HIV
South Africa is home to more than 7 million people living with HIV, most of whom share an immunity comparable to people without HIV. This improved lifespan is primarily due to antiretroviral therapy, which allowed for the elimination of HIV-related retinal inflammations that immunocompromised sufferers were susceptible to. The question raised now is if people living with HIV share the vision status akin to their HIV negative counterparts as they approach near-normal lifespans.

A recent study at UKZN's discipline of Optometry examined the retina with an imaging tool. This optical coherence tomograph compared the structural integrity of the retina of healthy HIV positive people to HIV negative people. It also studied aspects of superior visual function, including colour vision and contrast vision. The findings revealed that vision was not compromised in healthy people living with HIV and was comparable to HIV negative persons. However, the underlying retinal structure of healthy people with HIV showed sub-clinical structural differences. This suggests that the retina's structure may be susceptible to changes before decline in visual acuity is experienced in healthy people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy. All of which leads to raising the long-term concerns regarding the eye as people living with HIV continue to live longer.

These findings are an alert for service providers and people living with HIV with adequate immunity not to be complacent. Documenting and tracking of the retinal structure during routine eye examinations may trigger appropriate care before vision becomes permanently affected. Adopting a wellness approach for healthy people living with HIV should be considered before their vision-related quality of life is affected.
