Cellcentric, spółka celowa Daimler / Volvo dla produkcji ogniw wodorowych, kompletuje dostawców napędu wodorowego. W czerwcu 2021 ogłoszono, że dostawcą sprężarek powietrznych będzie firma Bosch. Bosch rozpocznie regularne dostawy sprężarek powietrznych w 2025 roku wraz z seryjną produkcją wodorowych ciężarówek Mercedes oraz Volvo.

Ogniwo paliwowe Volvo / Mercedes powstaje w ramach JV pod nazwą Cellcentric, powołanego do życia na wiosnę 2020 roku. Kapitał zakładowy przedsięwzięcia to 1,4 mld USD, gdzie firmy posiadają po połowie udziałów. Firma rozpoczęła kompletację dostawców podzespołów do produkcji napędu wodorowego. Pierwszym z nich jest firma Bosch. Bosch dotychczas zakontraktował już dostawy wielu kluczowych podzespołów dla ogniwa wodorowego Nikola. Regularna produkcja ogniwa paliwowego Nikola dla modeli Two i Tre rozpocznie się w 2023 roku.

Sprężarki powietrza dla ogniwa paliwowego to kluczowy komponent zapewniający ciągłe dostawy tlenu. Dostawy będą się odbywać w ramach umowy długoterminowej. Ze sprężarką dla Cellcentric zostanie dostarczony elektroniczny układ sterowania dostaw tlenu. Istotna jest m.in. odpowiednia filtracja powietrza w krótkim czasie. Obecnie w firmie Bosch nad rozwojem sprężarek powietrza pracuje 15 międzydziałowych zespołów naukowców i inżynierów. Sprężarki powietrza będą posiadać moc 20 kW lub 30 kW. Kompresory powietrzne o mocy 20 kW będzie pracować na systemach o napięciu 250-450 V lub 450-850 V. Mocniejszy wariant o mocy 30 kW współpracuje z systemami 450 – 850 V. Sprężarki będą pracować z prędkością nawet 100 000 obr/min. Obecnie największym wyzwaniem jest opracowanie wystarczająco szybkich silników elektrycznych do napędu kompresora.
