Making the Past Accessible: Conserving South Africa’s Heritage through Zotero and the Internet Archive

This project employs technology donated by the Internet Archive to help South Africans establish a digital repository that preserves endangered primary sources, using Zotero software to enhance the organization of this expandable collection of meta-data. Similar to the evidence in the India Office of the British Library, the type-set documents contained in South Africa’s archives are a treasure, illuminating vital histories from the biography of Mahatma Gandhi to the strategies of movements opposing racism. Due to the worldwide interest in saving and viewing such resources, a host of internationally-directed digitization efforts have been launched in South Africa over the last several years. Some of these initiatives display primary evidence on subscription-only websites in Europe and America, thereby creating “ownership” comcerns that complicate future plans to use computer technology and outside funding in local efforts to conserve South Africa’s heritage. Mindful of these issues, “Making the Past Accessible” seeks to establish a freely available network cloud with a South African domain name controlled by in-country stakeholders committed to maintaining an online archive that houses digitized evidence from a range of repositories, libraries, and related institutions.

South African archivists and academics are just becoming aware of Zotero’s innovative applications. Now that this tool is being designed for non-English-speaking societies, this may be an especially opportune moment to launch “Making the Past Accessible.” Contemporary South Africa has eleven official languages, among them English, isiZulu, isiXhosa, SeSotho, SeTswana, Afrikaans, etc—each of these mother-tongues have literate traditions that extend back in time, often over centuries.
