Im Oktober 1998 feierte das Wodan- Bier der Privatbrauerei GANTER seinen hundertsten Geburtstag. Zu diesem Anlass wurde auf dem Gelände des GANTER- Hausbiergartens ein Festzelt aufgestellt und eine Kulturwoche mit Konzerten und Kleinkunst veranstaltet.
Aufgrund des großen Echos wurde 1999 diese „Wodan Woche“ wiederholt. Es sollte ein noch größerer Erfolg daraus werden, so daß der Umbau einer ehemaligen Werkstatthalle mit entsprechendem Ambiente zu einer Halle für Konzerte und sonstigen kulturellen Anlässen beschlossen wurde.
Die Wodan Halle war geboren!
Nun war zufälligerweise die erste Veranstaltung in der neuen Halle ein Konzert der Boy Group „Back Street Boys“, die in kleinem und quasi geheimem Rahmen ein Video ihres damals neuen Hits „Shape of my heart“ für den Musiksender VIVA drehten...
Ein wichtiger Schritt für die Zukunft der Wodan Halle war damals die Übernahme der musikalischen Leitung und Konzertorganisation durch Ray Austin, einem Vollblutmusiker und „altem Hasen“ in der südbadischen Konzertszene. So schloss sich auch der Kreis zwischen zwei langjährigen Freunden, dem Vermieter der Wodan Halle und Betreiber des GANTER- Hausbiergartens, Gerhard Spiecker und Ray Austin (Foto) nämlich. Sie hatten schon vor 25 Jahren zusammen im Folk und Blues Club gewirkt und Spiecker war auch einmal der Tourneeplaner Austins.

Konzept...

Ray Austin und Gerhard Spiecker wollten aufgrund ihrer Erfahrungen in anderen Institutionen die Wodan Halle nicht in Vereinsform und unabhängig von öffentlichen Zuschüssen betreiben. Ziel war und ist mit vielen Ideen - weniger mit großen Investitionen-aus der Wodan Halle einen Treffpunkt für Freunde der Live- Musik-Unterhaltung zu machen. Es sollte ein Forum für Musiker aus dem Freiburger Raum geschaffen werden. Dabei sollten die von Austin ausgesuchten Musiker selbst als Veranstalter fungieren, während Austin nur für den organisatorischen Rahmen, die Werbung und die Öffentlichkeits-arbeit usw. betreffend, verantwortlich sein so
